Too many acronyms...   :o   ?    :)
Sorry.

The OP (original poster) used the term FIL (father-in-law) to describe the source and history of his FL (F originally for the 74 ci (cubic inch), up from a 61 ci, updated motor and kept for the subsequent big twins) from the prior W and E models.  The L was adopted early for the touring models and kept, now seemingly meaning the shroud covered front forks.  At one time the FL meant a touring big twin with an electric start.

His bike started life as an FX but received a different fork assembly and fenders, thus making it look like a smaller FL model.

Contrast that to an FX with the big twin motor and a Sportster style front suspension.  The frame came to us via the FXE and FXR (R for rubber mount) models which had a touring styled frame, while the XL defines a Sportster with a smaller V twin in a still lighter touring style frame.  Dynas became the FXDs, Softais can be either FL or FX, etc.

Makes sense?  As Shakespeare said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Lettering has grown since, seemingly trying to be descriptive (WG for wide glide, etc) or just the next in a series only HD understands.  There doesn't seem much long-term philosophy in the naming.

See "Harley Davidson Since 1985" by Allan Girdler for reference.
"No man ever steps in the same river twice,
For it is not the same river and he is not the same man."

If you find what @AbueloBill said about the letter meanings in the H-D models interesting then you might find this thread interesting.

Hey y’all

So the bike, Thumper, was bought by my father in law (FIL) new in 79.  It’s a 78-1/2 and I think there are some motor changes that happened in that year but it was originally a 1200cc  V twin.

He put a different tank on it, two fill caps, one is a dummy.  It’s not a split tank but it is wider than a stock FXE Super glide.  He also put on bigger fenders, similar to a FLH, not sure what they are exactly.  He also added a mustang studded seat.  It has an old school S&S carb and he sent the heads out to California the Branch Racing to be ported and polished and valves.  He also put on a dual coil set.  Also replaced the headlight with a different setup that’s lower and doesn’t include the bezel stuff on the FXE.

The FXE is a 1200 cc FLH with a sportster fork and triple tree setup.  It’s about 500 lbs, pretty nimble.

I just cleaned it up and freshened up the engine and ended up putting a new lower end in it due to a cam bearing failure taking out the case.

I also upgraded ignition and clutch basket.

It’s got a warmed up cam and its bored .60 over so about a 1400 now.  That plus the head work makes it go pretty good.  Second gear is a beast.

I thought about switching up the metal but it’s really coo the way it is so just left it alone.

That is a sweet looking scoot. And the fact that it has family history makes it even more cool!

As you know I got a peak at it Friday and pix really don't do it justice, but close. Next time I see it there I'm going to get up a bit closer and leave a hdbitchin business card.

Took her out for a spin today.  On the way home I got on it 2nd and 3rd.  Missed a couple times then started missing a lot.  Finally died.  Backfire through carb and pipes trying to start.  Pushed it home, a few hundred feet.  Adjusted my timing and got it started.  Idled great.  Took it back out and it died again.  Pushed back home.  Sounds like no fire at all now.  Got it on the charger and I frig with it later.

About 80 psi compression both cylinders.  Going to replace plugs-pretty black.  Mag maybe?

I need to double check the compression - I didn’t have the end adapter on the gauge - hopefully it comes up with that when I find it.

Compression at 80 PSI is pretty low.

Ha!  Easy!  Cool screw came out.  Nothing like a straight mount shovel to rattle the fillings out.

Although I need to double check that compression when I find my adapter....https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190930/39aa8477bdddf6e61733f01495646f9d.jpg
