Too many acronyms...   :o   ?    :)

The OP (original poster) used the term FIL (father-in-law) to describe the source and history of his FL (F originally for the 74 ci (cubic inch), up from a 61 ci, updated motor and kept for the subsequent big twins) from the prior W and E models.  The L was adopted early for the touring models and kept, now seemingly meaning the shroud covered front forks.  At one time the FL meant a touring big twin with an electric start.

His bike started life as an FX but received a different fork assembly and fenders, thus making it look like a smaller FL model.

Contrast that to an FX with the big twin motor and a Sportster style front suspension.  The frame came to us via the FXE and FXR (R for rubber mount) models which had a touring styled frame, while the XL defines a Sportster with a smaller V twin in a still lighter touring style frame.  Dynas became the FXDs, Softais can be either FL or FX, etc.

Makes sense?  As Shakespeare said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Lettering has grown since, seemingly trying to be descriptive (WG for wide glide, etc) or just the next in a series only HD understands.  There doesn't seem much long-term philosophy in the naming.

See "Harley Davidson Since 1985" by Allan Girdler for reference.

If you find what @AbueloBill said about the letter meanings in the H-D models interesting then you might find this thread interesting.
